Despite his resolve, Bast must have succumbed to sleep because he was woken by Hel’s body jerking in his arms. Late morning sunlight whispered through the low cloud and mist hung over them. His body ached from the night on the beach rather than any injury, and his wings itched like sand had worked its way between every feather, which it may well have. He was on his feet an instant after Hel, eyes scanning the horizon for the threat that the thrill of her fear suggested was imminent.

“What’s up?” he murmured, reaching for his pants that lay abandoned on the beach as Hel dropped her guard position and started yanking on her clothes.

“We’ve got company. A portal not far away. Feels like that bat-winged asshole.”

Bast pulled on his shirt and looked along the coast where she was pointing. Elementals had sharp eyes made for hunting at height. In the far distance, he could just make out a glinting spire of rock in the shallows. He swore under his breath. They’d fallen asleep within sight of the damn thing. They were lucky they hadn’t been ambushed by wraiths or worse while they slept, or while they’d … Bast shook his head and focused on pulling on his boots. Better not to think about the previous night. It wasn’t something they could repeat.

“We need to find out what he’s up to, what those structures are. We’ll need all the information we can get to convince Nerida not to turn against us. I can fly us there, but I’m still drained dry. My power’s a bust until we get back to civilisation,” Bast said.

“Good thing it’s my power that holds him off, then. Let’s do it,” Hel replied, shrugging on her leather jacket and hiding more of her beautiful skin from his view.

Not the time to be thinking about that, he reminded himself. He needed to focus.

When they were both as ready as they were going to be, he turned to Hel and held out his arms. “Your chariot awaits, Lady Soul.”

The corner of Hel’s mouth kicked up in a smile, but she was frowning too. “You can’t say shit like that.”

“Like what?”

“Calling me a lady. That’s not what I am.”

Bast studied the woman in front of him, frustrated at the discomfort his words had sparked in her and knowing he had no business trying to make her comfortable with him, anyway. What they needed was distance.

“You’re my mate. I’m the Lord of the Soul Court. Or at least I will be once the council acknowledges I have just as much power as any of them. What did you think that meant? Get used to it.”

He almost laughed at the wide-eyed shock she gave him in response, quickly followed by her familiar raging anger. She shoved hard at his chest and he couldn’t hold his smirk back as he caught her wrists and spun her up into his arms. If there was one thing he knew after their months together, it was how to get a rise from her.
